Exercise with your Corgi

All dogs need regular exercise, but the corgi needs daily exercise more than some other breeds. Corgis were originally bred to graze cattle, which means they have the energy and stamina to do the long day’s work. Without regular exercise, a corgi can become hyperactive and destructive indoors. Due to the shape of their body, they are prone to problems with their backs. They are also known for their voracious appetite and being overweight increases the likelihood of spinal problems. This is another reason for your corgi to get enough exercise each day and maintain a healthy weight.

Grooming

Corgis do not require special grooming, in fact, they should not bathe more frequently than every three weeks. Many owners bathe them only once every few months. They should be brushed once a week to remove loose hair. These dogs shed a little bit of hair every day, but twice a year they shed their fur copiously and during these stages, they may need daily brushing. Many corgis do not require nail clippings because due to their activity levels, their nails naturally wear out during exercise.

Health

All corgis have dwarfism. Due to the shape of their bodies, long backs, and short legs, they are more likely than other breeds to suffer from back and spinal problems, as well as joint and arthritis problems. They also develop hip dysplasia more frequently than other races. Regular exercise, weight control, and good nutrition are important in decreasing the chance that a corgi will develop any of these health problems. Steps should also be taken to discourage you from the urge to jump off furniture, such as the bed or sofa, as it could lead to back or joint injury.

Knowledge

Knowing your corgi well and what makes him a unique dog is an important part of caring for your pet. Corgis are known as “herding” dogs. Corgis are also referred to as “heelers”, they would nip at the heels of the larger animals to keep them on the move.

These canines also tend to bark alert, they bark when playing, they complain and shout. Understand that your dog is very vocal, and although training may change this a little, you should be prepared to listen to your dog’s talk. This behavior is the result of their grazing history. They are often believed to be a misbehaving breed due to their vocal range. This sometimes seems to be growling when it isn’t actually. Or biting when it’s just pinching. Both are normal behaviors in a corgi and are part of his daily care and attention.
