Pet Ferret: How To Bathe Them

Like any pet, to stay clean and healthy, your pet ferret needs a bath from time to time. And, as with dogs, there are ferrets that are very easy to bathe because they enjoy the water a lot, others that get scared, and others that get nervous and stressed.

To make the bath a rewarding experience for both of you, you need to follow a series of guidelines when you bathe.

Bathing Guidelines for Your Pet Ferret

First of all, do not abuse the bathroom. As in all animals, their fur/hair has natural protection that is lost if they bathe too often. Therefore, experts indicate that we should not bathe our pet ferret more than once a month. If we do it more often, the condition of their fur will be not so great.

The water must be hot so that the pet ferret does not get cold or feel uncomfortable in the water. The body temperature of ferrets varies between 101.3-103.1ºF and the water should be similar. Make sure the water is not too hot that it could burn them. It is also important that you do not overfill the bathtub so that the animal can support its feet all the time, although do not stop holding it to avoid slipping.

Use a ferret shampoo and conditioner and have a towel ready to dry when the bath is over. Wet the body of the animal, put a little shampoo in your hand. Rub the entire body, especially the tail, abdomen, and perianal area. Make sure to rinse it well to remove any traces of shampoo, apply the conditioner, and rinse it off.

It is best to let your pet ferret dry on its own. It will do this by running, rolling, and rubbing against everything it touches. If we want to use the dryer, we must make sure that we do not burn it with the air,. Although they tend to get quite nervous with the sound.

Finally, brush it off and your ferret’s coat will be clean and shiny.
