Pet Parrot: Teaching them how to Dance

Parrots are very intelligent animals. They have an amazing ability to mimic human speech, and can also copy actions. This is how you use your mime skills to teach your pet parrot how to dance.

Step 1 – Before you start teaching your parrot to dance

The pet parrot or parrots you want to teach should feel confident about you. Parrots have a short attention span, this means that more than two 10-minute sessions will be needed. You must be willing to look like a complete idiot in order for your bird to learn by performing its actions, this means a lot of dance moves.

Step 2 – Choose a song for your pet parrot

The choice of music is important, as your pet parrot will begin to associate a particular song with time and dance. Pick a song or artist that you don’t mind listening to many times as there will be a lot of repetition. They say Queen songs are the best because there are a lot of fast beats.

Step 3 – Training your pet parrot

Train your birds when they are most active. When a parrot is making noise, this usually means that it wants to attract attention. This is the ideal time to start training. Only train for short periods of time and make it fun for the parrot. If you try too hard or get angry with them, they will see the dance as a negative action and it will take a lot of time and effort to correct. Pet parrots can usually learn simple actions in about a week, depending on how often you train them.

Step 4 – A simple move

It is a very easy decision to start with your pet parrot. You put it on top of their cage, on their perch, or on the back of a chair – wherever it’s most comfortable for them. When you are paying attention to the parrot and at the same time in the music, you should start to move your head enthusiastically for a few seconds. You have to get their attention. When they look at you, encourage the bird with words like “come on * name * wink” or “nod * name *” to cheer up the parrots. Remember, if the bird seems to be bored or distressed by the idea that its owners have their heads about to fall it is best to take a break and try again.

Step 5 – Moving their wings

Due to differences in bird anatomy, you will have to make it as easy as possible for your parrot to understand what to do. This is especially important when it comes to teaching them to dance with your wings. When you have achieved the previous step you will notice that the pet parrot will begin to move its wings, that is when you should put your hands in the armpits of the parrot. Keep your “wings” to the sides of your body and gradually increase in parallel with your body. The movement should go hand in hand with a vocal command, such as: “Spread your wings” or “Up your wings.” Give your birds a pat and some encouragement when they show interest and repeat until you get it.

Step 6 – Head down

To teach the pet parrot how to do this move guide it in the dance and do the move with them while simultaneously giving a vocal command. By now your bird should be comfortable with dance time and immediately interested. Repetition is key. Don’t forget to praise your birds as you go.
