Pet Turtle: Disadvantages of Having Them

If you’re getting a pet turtle, or are considering getting one at least, it’s good to know about their advantages and disadvantages.

Pet Turtles are mute.

Turtles are mute, they don’t make sounds. Therefore we must pay attention to other signs to know the state of health or mood of our pet turtle.

Believe it or not, falls deal damage to them

When they are small, due to their adorable and strong appearance, it is common to hold them too long in the hands, with the corresponding risk of accidentally falling to the ground. We must avoid lifting our pet turtle off the ground unnecessarily because, despite their resistant appearance, a fall can do them a lot of damage. They are not toys. They feel pain like any animal. However, they cannot express it, so it is best to avoid handling or lifting them unnecessarily.

Pet turtles are unable to regulate body temperatures

Being reptiles they cannot regulate their body temperature, so they depend on the sun and the ambient temperature to maintain it. If the temperature drops too low, the pet turtle will go into hibernation, from which they will slowly come out once the temperature equilibrates again. If they live in closed, warm places with a stable temperature, hibernation will not occur or will disappear little by little.

They get stressed and are not traditional pets

Despite being very sociable animals, they can also become stressed or upset, especially if we lift them off the ground. Nothing disgusts a pet turtle more than this. When this happens and our turtle hides in the shell, it means to us to leave it alone.

They are not traditional pets, so we can sometimes feel confused by their health. If we believe that something is not working as it should, without thinking twice we go to a veterinarian.
