Origin

Whenever we talk about the origin of some species, it is difficult to cite very reliable sources because there are no abundant historical records that are reliable. In the case of the Maine Coon, it is known that it came to North America in the 19th century. Hence the name Maine, which carries one of the states into which the United States is divided. According to The Cat Fanciers Association, these cats are the first native exhibition breed native to the United States, but it is not known with certainty how it reached the northeast of the continent.

They’re Showcats

Not so much now, but in the late nineteenth century, the Maine Coon’s fame grew because they were such beautiful individuals that they often participated in exhibition contests. In fact, one of the most famous Maine Coons in history is the Cosey, the winner of a silver medal documented in the 1895 ‘National Cat Show’ tournament held at Madison Square Garden in New York. Social interest in them declined throughout the first half of the 20th century.

The Size of Maine Coon Cats

It is one of the features that most impresses the Maine Coon because it is a large cat, one of the largest that can be found domesticated. Regarding weight, males can reach 22 pounds and females 19-20.

Physical Appearance

The size, together with its wild feline appearance, with a beautiful face but that can be intimidating due to that deep look they have and their lush fur, makes their image powerful and intimidating. This is something that is not in line with their character. One of the most characteristic physical peculiarities of the Maine Coon are its ears, pointed and with hair in the shape of a brush on the upper part.

Fur of Maine Coon Cats

It is adapted to harsh climates, hence the Maine Coon’s thick and abundant coat. But this is not at odds with its being bright and beautiful. Although it also helps to make the image of the animal as powerful as it is intimidating for many people. The silky collar around its head similar to that of the lion. Saving the distance, is another distinctive sign of this precious breed of cat.

Different Shades

The Maine Coon is one of the cats with the greatest chromatic variety without having to be mongrels. There are dark colors, closer to big cats, but there are also cream tones, even white.

Maine Coon cats are long-lived and they enjoy water

Two peculiarities that many breeds do not have are longevity since the Maine Coon can live up to 16 years, which is a long time for a cat. And that of enjoying water, something even less common in the case of these animals. They usually repel it.

Their Character

As we told you before, despite the fact that their image says one thing, the reality is that the character of the Maine Coons is affable and even affectionate. They are sociable and adapt very well to family life. They even get along relatively well with other animals living under the same roof. In short, they are a very good choice if you want to adopt a cat.
