Pet Cat: Why they prefer to die outside

After being cared for and protected for years in a family, suddenly one day the pet cat disappears and dies in a hidden place. Or somewhere outside. Those who have experienced the situation wonder: “Why didn’t they seek for my help when they were dying or felt really ill?”

Some people think that maybe it wasn’t that important to their pet cat after all. But they are very wrong. Some specialists consider that this effect occurs because they seek comfort, away from annoying noises or lights, but most believe that the justification lies rather in their evolutionary process.

How a pet cat dies

To understand the behavior of this little feline, it is essential to examine the way it deals with death.  All humans know that sooner or later we will die. And when we believe it is close, we act accordingly. However, the idea of death is not assumed by the cat and therefore cannot predict it, no matter how ill it may feel.

For a pet cat, death is synonymous with a disease that threatens it. If the pain worsens, there are only two alternative strategies left. Escape or hide. If it occurs while the cat is roaming its outdoor territory, its natural reaction will be to try to hide in a nearby shelter. If it happens to the heat of the home, it will seek an indoor refuge. There it will remain, waiting for the threat to subside or for the pain to stop.

Their instinct tells them that they cannot be weak in the face of the dangers that lie in wait and this has a lot to do with their own evolution. Throughout their existence, cats have learned that there are large predators that seek out weak and vulnerable beings. In such a situation, your pet cat would feel like an easy target.

If they are older

This also explains why cats can be older or seriously ill and suffer, but at the same time consciously avoid showing signs of their illness.

When your pet cat gets old, we could say that they build an artificial shell over them, as a form of protection. Until their forces do not give more of themselves. Bridging the gap is the same process that pregnant cats go through when they give birth, hiding their vulnerable kittens.

We must also bear in mind that, thanks to the fact that they have become domestic animals, they receive numerous care, previously unthinkable. This means that today a pet cat can live to be 16-17 years old. However, it also causes it to live the last ones with greater wear and tear and more diseases related to old age.
