Miniature donkey

This rare pet is literally a giant stuffed animal. The miniature donkey is cute, cuddly, good with children (not a riding animal), and very clever. Despite what some may think. Although they are not as large as their other familiar donkeys, they still require a lot of outdoor space.

They can weigh up to 130 kilos, so it will be very difficult for you to want to carry and hug them like a dog or cat. If you decide to have a miniature donkey, keep in mind that they cannot stand loneliness. You must be by their side at all times or adopt another donkey to keep them company.

Bearded dragon

There are people who are a fan of reptiles but who cannot have a crocodile at home. They, therefore, choose to adopt a bearded dragon. In fact, they are animals that are becoming more and more popular as pets because they are easy to care for and their maintenance is not so complex and expensive. Originally from Australia, they live between 6 and 8 years. These creatures, although difficult to caress, will not cover your entire house with hair.

Sugar glider

Also called “sugar glider” they look like hamsters of the new generations. Surely you never heard of this rare pet and it is because they are not rodents. In fact, these animals are from the marsupial family. They are associated with the word sugar because they have an extreme preference for sugary foods; they are adorable and smart.

However, and although they are part of the list of rarest pets in the world, many do not recommend the adoption of sugar glider for various reasons:

  • They are nocturnal animals (and probably at night you will not be able to attend to them). In addition, they usually make a lot of noise at this time of day.
  • They are wild animals and have not undergone domestication like dogs or cats. You will have by your side an animal that will suffer in captivity and that will not fully enjoy your company.
  • They do not adapt to loneliness, they require a member of the same species.
  • In captivity, they are susceptible to depression and even self-mutilation.
  • A large cage is needed for the rare pet, even if it is small.
  • Their diet includes insects and foods that an inexperienced person might neglect.
  • They use their glands to mark territory, very unpleasant.
  • You should clean their cage every 2-3 days or so, they are very dirty animals.
  • They are not social animals, they will probably bite and scratch anyone who comes near.
  • Veterinarians who can treat you are rare if not practically nonexistent in many countries.
A Sugar Glider inside of someone’s hands

For all the aforementioned, it is considered that adopting a sugar glider is an irresponsible action. Furthermore, we are condemning a living being to 15 years of cruelty and lack of animal welfare. Although it may seem like an endearing “pet”, the truth is that it is not, we better visit it in its natural environment. If you think otherwise, you can learn more about these creatures here.

Fennec or desert fox

The fennec fox has suffered a shocking boom in recent years, causing the irresponsible adoption of this beautiful mammal. Having a fennec fox as a rare pet is, as in the case of the sugar glider, totally inadvisable.

They are social animals that live in large families, so the adoption of one of them alone could not be understood. Nor would it be understandable to try to recreate its natural habitat (desert and temperatures between 104ºF and -104ºC) or to pretend that it would act in a similar way to a dog or a cat. In this way, again we find an animal that has not been domesticated by man and that has wild instincts.

The fennec fox, on the fringes of a deep burrow, is a very active animal with nocturnal habits, moments in which we will not be able to satisfy its company. Finally, if we decided to cage it, our rare pet would probably die.

Stick insect/Stickbug/Walking Stick

What’s rarer than having a stick insect as a rare pet? This is the perfect animal for eccentric people with very particular tastes. They will not be the most affectionate pets, but they will be the most interesting and even rewarding since the life of insects has great value.

Although their care is really simple and it is good to teach children to take care of another creature, it is important to bear in mind that the bodies of these insects are very sensitive. They can break easily if you handle them roughly.

Capybara

Unlike the fennec fox, the capybara can be a good pet. However, it is not appropriate since it is an animal in danger of extinction.

It is the largest living rodent, so it is the larger cousin of the guinea pig and hamster. They are cuddly when raised properly and very smart. One of the disadvantages of having it as a pet is that it needs a lot of space, a pool or pond to feel good. This rare pet requires a lot of maintenance.

Mini pig

Although these are farm animals, if you are going to love and care for them, having a pig as a pet is simply adorable. And although they are known as “mini” this is a bit of a myth because they can grow to the size of a dog and weigh 30 kilos. They are and will continue to be extremely adorable as well. On the positive side, these rare pets are animals with very high levels of intelligence. They can be trained in the same way as dogs.

Hedgehogs

Another of the rarest pets in the world, hedgehogs are the love of the rude and as difficult as it may seem they can become a great option as pets. If you get used to human contact and presence, they will be creatures that can give you a lot of affection. Just looking at that little face is dying of tenderness. In fact, when they are happy, they are very soft to the touch. Their quills are not dangerous at all and they are very easy to care for.

Of course, if you adopt a hedgehog, it is essential to become aware of all the care that this animal needs. Since it still has many of its wild instincts. In recent years, the demand for these small beings as pets has grown considerably, distancing them from their natural habitats and places of origin. This fact, in addition to modifying their customs, has also led to the reduction of their population. And, therefore, species such as the popular African pygmy hedgehog are in slight danger of extinction.

Holding a young Domestic Skunk
By Melissa Keizer

Skunk

Among all the animals this is the last that I would think of having as a rare pet, despite the fact that they look beautiful as babies. It is too exotic and unique a creature, we cannot forget its special gift of emitting foul odors when it feels threatened. Therefore, if you like the skunk it is best to keep it comfortable, happy, and content, and visit it being free and wild. On the other hand, skunks are animals that are currently in danger of extinction due to the destruction of their natural habitat.

Tarantula

If you like the feeling of danger, this may be the rare pet for you. For some years now, tarantulas have become quite popular pets, despite the collective fear. If, on the other hand, you are a nervous, sensitive person and you like to caress your pet all the time, it is better to opt for another pet. Tarantulas feed on live insects, they are calm and quiet. So, whether you already live with this species of spider or if you are considering doing so, ask yourself if it really is what you need and, above all, if you can offer all the care that required to live in the best conditions.
