Tips for Having a Pet Tarantula

It is good to know that if we want a pet to play with, take for walks and pamper, a pet tarantula is not a good idea. Spiders, in general, don’t ‘do’ much, except what they need to survive. If you still want to have a tarantula as a pet, pay attention to these tips:

Choose a quiet species

For beginners in this type of exotic pets, it is preferable to choose a docile species that does not require much care and attention. For example, you can choose pink-legged, striped-kneed, red-ringed, or chick tarantulas.

Although they are more striking, giant tarantulas, orange or cobalt blue baboons are not recommended due to their level of aggressiveness and the dangerousness of their venom.

Buy a suitable terrarium for your pet tarantula

Almost all tarantulas adapt to tight spaces, although it is good if they have room to move around a bit in case they want to. If you choose an arboreal species you should place a branch or something similar so that it can climb.

Terrestrial tarantulas are simpler in terms of elements in the terrarium. It is recommended that you at least buy a 20-liter capacity and, if your pet grows a lot, change to an 80-liter one.

Analyze the health of the pet tarantula

Before buying or adopting it, it is very important that you pay attention to its general condition. For example, if you see them curled up in the corner of the terrarium or on their legs, perhaps it is because they will soon die because they’re a certain age.

If it is on its back and with its legs ‘in the air’ it is probably because it will soon shed its skin, so the next time you see it it will be larger. A healthy tarantula stands with its legs extended in a circle pointing backward. Also, make sure that it has all eight legs and the two ‘arms’ or pedipalps in front.

Consult with an expert

If you have decided to have a tarantula as a pet, but you do not know anything about this animal, we recommend that you consult with a veterinarian or even with the salesperson of the store for advice.
