When the day has come, there will be at least one moment where you have a wound on yourself. If you have pet dogs, or perhaps, just a dog, there is a likely chance that they will lick that wound. As they would lick your wound, several questions would come up to mind regarding dogs licking wounds. Some of the most common questions you could have is: Why is my dog licking my wound? Can their licking actually heal my wounds, or help it heal? Is it good if they lick my wounds in the first place? Won’t they get sick from this?

Pet dogs instinctively lick their own wounds constantly to disinfect. Their saliva is somewhat antiseptic. Although this necessarily does not mean that it is beneficial for humans.

If your pet dog licks your wounds it is very positive because they are trying to heal you. It is a way of expressing their love and respect for you, taking care of you. However, and although we should not scold them for doing it or trying to do it, we should avoid it by distracting them with something else, such as a toy or food.

Dog saliva is beneficial for dog wounds, but not human wounds. Humans need to use other things to disinfect our wounds like hydrogen peroxide or iodine.

If a dog licks our wounds it is very likely that they end up becoming infected, so we must prevent them from doing so. Not through punishment, but through distraction. On the other hand, it is scientifically proven that pet dogs are capable of detecting diseases. If your dog smells or licks you insistently some part of your body, such as the back or an area near the kidneys, etc. You may be sick and you still don’t know it. However, they will have already detected it. Go to the doctor and get a checkup.
