Facts about Inseparable birds? Or, should I say… lovebirds? Don’t worry, we got them.

Where their Scientific Name comes from

Undoubtedly, they are commonly known as inseparable birds. The scientific name of Agapornis derives from the Greek terms agape (love, affection). Also, ornis, also from Greek terms, means bird. Certainly, they’re popularly known as lovebirds, inseparable, or love birds.

Variety Of Colors

Its tail is short and rounded and its plumage is very colorful. With green and red or orange predominating. Although, there are many mutations among which you can find colors of blue and violet. In addition, with gray specimens.

Native to Africa

Lovebirds are a genus of psittacine birds in the family Psittaculidae. Without a doubt, whose members are native to Africa.

The Agapornis genus includes 9 species: 

  • The Agapornis canus or inseparable Malagasy
  • Fischer inseparable or Agapornis fischeri
  • Agapornis lilianae or inseparable from Nyasa
  • inseparable cachetón or Agapornis nigrigenis
  • Agapornis personatus or inseparable black-headed
  • Lovebird pullarius or inseparable redhead
  • Agapornis roseicollis or inseparable from Namibia
  • Agapornis swinderniana or crested inseparable
  • Lovebird taranta or insatiable abyssinian.

The Inseparable Birds’ Size

Lovebirds are small parrots. So, the size of the 9 species is between 13-16 cm.

What Lovebirds Eat

Lovebirds feed mainly on seeds, fruits and buds.

Impossible to Determine Their Gender

It’s impossible to be able to tell at first glance whether a lovebird is male. Or female. Since only 3 species(taranta, cana, and pullarius), have sexual dimorphism. To know the sex of the rest, a veterinary analysis or DNA test is necessary.

Mating: Their Season, Nest, & Hatching Duration

The best time for lovebirds to reproduce is during the early spring. Unluckily, they do not withstand extreme temperatures. Also, the couple builds the nest out of tree twigs, bark, or sawdust. Normally the female lays 4 to 6 eggs which she incubates for approximately 20 days until the chicks hatch.

Their Lifespan

On average, these birds live between 10-15 years.

Inseparable Bird Characteristics

Lovebirds are happy, fun, playful, and sociable birds. They are extremely loving, especially with their partner. However, they are very territorial and do not accept willingly the presence of a stranger in their space.
