Yes, they can. Contrary to what many may think, the company of a pet beetle is fun and even interactive. With the right care, your caregivers will have good allies to relax and disconnect from the ‘real world’. In practical terms, a simpler option than cats and dogs, animals that demand games, and even daily walks outside the home.

Also known as Coleoptera, beetles represent the group within the animal kingdom with the largest number of subspecies. Some 375,000 have been identified and it is estimated that there is a considerable number yet to be discovered. They are capable of surviving in any environment, although within the seabed they are not very abundant.

Pet Beetle at Home: General Care

For practical reasons, the best pet beetles are those that live on land. To properly care for them, a terrarium must be prepared, whose conditions will vary according to the stage of development of the insect.

As long as they remain larvae and pupae, they need the soil to be moist, but not excessively moist. Each specimen requires at least 10 square centimeters of ‘exclusive use’. Otherwise, cannibalism episodes may occur. Crushed cat food mixed with the dirt works for the menu.

In adulthood, the habitat should be supplemented with twigs and small natural plants. It is important to place an incandescent light bulb in one corner of the tank. A pet beetle cannot self-regulate their temperature. Therefore, they will move closer to or away from this light source according to their needs.

Feeding an Adult Beetle

Fresh fruits are a good option in feeding the pet beetle. You can also get special formulas for them at pet stores. Products that, in addition to supplying the nutritional requirements, do not attract flies as it happens with natural foods.
