Pet Hamsters: Pros and Cons

If you’re adopting pet hamsters, or just one, it’s natural to think the good and bad things about them. Reading this article will hopefully help you decide if you should get pet hamsters or not.

Pros of Pet Hamsters

They don’t need too much space. It is enough with their cage or terrarium in conditions so that they feel comfortable.

They do not require large amounts of food. Although they are gluttonous by nature, like almost any animal, their size makes them very economical in that regard. These pet hamsters also have natural adaptations (a kind of bags that go from the cheeks to the shoulders) in which they store the food, which makes them look even more fun.

Pet hamsters are not expensive. In fact, they are very cheap and can be easily purchased at almost any pet store. Their food is also cheap in these stores, although with a little experience we can prepare it ourselves.

They do not need companion pet hamsters. They do not get sad, on the contrary: they enjoy having their space alone, being the kings of their little kingdom. Remember that hamsters are territorial animals. If what we want is simply a pet, having them alone is the best option.

Cons of Pet Hamsters

They don’t live long. In good hygiene, health, and physical activity conditions a hamster can live up to three years.

Pet hamsters are physically delicate. They are very small, remember? You have to be very careful when handling them and avoid falls. A fall can cause internal damage and the death of the hamster. Ideally, do not lift them too high or handle them too far off the ground.

Pet hamsters require cleaning cage or terrarium care at least once a week, which despite not being too heavy can affect our free time. Neglecting this detail implies a serious health risk for the animal.

Water must be changed daily, it does not matter that we see it clean and transparent.

They are true reproduction machines. At 8-10 weeks the females begin sexual maturity and have their periods of heat every4-6 days. Their pregnancy lasts about 16days and they have an average of 7-8 four pups per delivery (although cases of up to more than fifteen are known).

If we put all that together we will have a little apocalypse for which we will not be prepared, unless that is precisely what we are looking for. If what you want is to have a pet and not an “army” of them, it is advisable to keep our hamster alone(they like it anyway).
