Do have a hamster? Or, are you thinking about getting a pet hamster? If so, you’re just in luck! Here are tips relating to pet hamsters.

Taking care of the Pet Hamster Cage

If we are going to choose between cages and terrariums we must know that both have advantages and disadvantages. Cages are easy to clean, but they don’t provide a natural environment or protect it too much. Terrariums are more complicated to clean, but they offer you greater protection and a more natural environment.

In any case, both require a common preparation for the pet hamster’s life. You must spread wood shavings on the bottom so that they absorb the feces and urine of the hamster(cleaning basically consists of removing the shavings and putting new ones). If you neglect this, it will not take long to smell bad and health problems will appear.

Contrary behavior?

The hamster is by nature very active and curious, so contrary behavior usually indicates health or feeding problems, or perhaps simply boredom.

Feeding Your Pet Hamster

They should be fed once a day. Pet hamsters save the food themselves to consume it when they want it. Avoid excess, as they can suffer from digestive problems if they are given too much food. Animals are gluttonous by nature, don’t forget.

Avoid Direct Sunlight

They do not tolerate direct sunlight (they are nocturnal), and their home should be located away from drafts that can cause colds.

Lack of Supervision not recommended

Leaving them out of the cage unsupervised is not recommended. If you do, apart from being a risk because you can trip over it and damage it, it will not take long for you to see the marks of its teeth on whatever surface is within reach

Elements of their Cage

The hamster’s home must have certain elements necessary for its quality of life: a feeder (preferably small), a container with water, gnaw toys (its teeth are constantly growing and need to wear them down), an exercise wheel, small stairs and others objects that can be used to climb and exercise.

Diet of Pet Hamsters

Their diet is quite simple: fruits, vegetables, corn (they love it), some dry bread, sunflower seeds, or even small pieces of meat, all in moderate quantities. It is advisable to give them a variety of foods that do not bore them. Pet hamster feed is sold in pet stores that may offer a little of everything.
