Step 1: Preparing Bath Materials for your Pet Hedgehog

Bathe your pet hedgehog every 2-3 months. You should always bathe it in a very shallow container or in the bathroom sink. Wash your pet with warm water and with a bar of soap for dogs or cats with a neutral PH and that does not have any odor. Have on hand a towel suitable for its size and a toothbrush exclusively for your pet hedgehog. Therefore, you can clean its quills well. In addition to the towel and the brush, also prepare the dryer to have it nearby. That way, you can dry their body immediately after bathing.

Step 2: Warnings

You must bear in mind that your hedgehog may be scared of water. To avoid being afraid, it is best to fill the container with water before taking your pet. It is also possible that your pet hedgehog, while you bathe them, defecates since it is normal behavior. You will simply have to change the water several times. If you prefer to avoid this, bathe your hedgehog on a day that they have eaten less.

Step 3: Supervise your pet hedgehog

In case you didn’t know, there are hedgehogs that like to swim so, if you see that they feel comfortable, let them linger in the water before bathing. But do not leave it unsupervised, especially you must pay attention to the water level so that it does not cover its head. At most, the water should cover its legs without reaching its neck. To start bathing them, you must hold them on one of your hands. And, with the other, pour a little warm water over their body very slowly.

Step 4: Bathing, Rinsing, & Drying

Once their quills have relaxed, rub gently in the direction of the tail, making a lather. Then put your hedgehog on its back, rub its belly, and its legs. Rinse your pet hedgehog so that no soap remains on their skin. After the washing and rinsing session, you will have to dry its legs and quills with the towel. Rub them backwards. Repeat this operation as many times as necessary. Then, take the dryer. With a temperature that is not too hot, just dry them.

Step 5: Do they dislike bathing?

If your pet hedgehog does not like the bath session very much and it stresses them too much, you can at least try to wash their paws. Hedgehogs usually relieve themselves while running. So if this happens, you could take advantage of and clean only their legs. In that case, you can take a container. Put a little lukewarm water and let it walk into the water to clean its limbs. Then dry them well.
